Distinguished Fellows Program
The Distinguished Fellows Program combines the school's most
generous scholarship support with a Leadership Practicum. Each
year 4-5 top MBA candidates are selected based on their potential
to make a positive impact in the business world and beyond. A
generous endowment provided by distinguished alumni supports full
tuition for all Fellows in the hopes of "attracting outstanding
future business leaders."(Donor,
Phil Purcell. Link to story).
Distinguished Fellows are selected each
year out of the general pool of applicants to the GSB.
The Leadership Practicum is designed to provide the Distinguished
Fellows with a broad perspective on leadership throughout their
two years on campus. Professor Davis serves as mentor to the Fellows
while exploring how leaders in various settings create positive
impact and an enduring legacy. Activities fall into four categories:
- Intellectual risk-taking that complements
the traditional MBA curriculum. We position the Practicum as an
honors course on leadership which will "fast forward"
the Fellows' capabilities. Leadership and followership are explored
in several domains including business, non-profit organizations,
government and the arts. We have taken the view that business
is inherently more than a vehicle for generating cash, but requires,
as well, a professional ethos, personal values and serious responsibilities.
-
Fellowship with all members of the Fellows community
(current students and alumni), faculty members, donors and prospective
Fellows.
-
Self-reflection as a critical component in strengthening
one's presence as a leader.
-
Community ethic in which Fellows assume leadership
roles either within the GSB or in the outside community. These
activities have included hands-on work with an entrepreneur
and the creation of a structured program to support other MBA
students in exploring leadership topics.
Each fellowship group pursues a self-defined practicum, creating
a unique experience every year.
Previous highlights of the program have included:
-
Shadowing a CEO for a day
-
Intimate interviews with Phil Purcell, Pete
Peterson, and other prominent business leaders
-
Visiting alumni Andy Alper, Chair of
NYC's Economic Development Council for Mayor Bloomberg
-
Assisting a local entrepreneur with business
strategy (Flying Foods)
- Creating space for deeper personal/career connections among
the current student body (Show & Tell)
