W. Allen Wallis
W. Allen Wallis
Former GSB Dean
W. Allen Wallis served as Dean of the GSB from 1956-1973. Dean Wallis and associate Dean James Lorie formulated a philosophy known as the "Chicago Approach to Business Education", which emphasized teaching underlying scientific knowledge and procedures as a basis for solving problems. Since then, the 'Chicago Approach" has become a dominant mode of graduate business education. An economist and statistician with a BA in Psychology from Minnesota and a graduate University Fellowship in economics from the University of Chicago, Wallis joined the faculty of the GSB in 1946. Prior to the GSB he served as director of research for the US Office of Scientific Research, economist and statistician for the National Resources Committee, and professor at Yale, Columbia, and Stanford Universities. After the GSB, Wallis accepted the presidency of the University of Rochester. Wallis also served in various advisory capacities under the Nixon, Ford, and Reagan administrations.
